Erratic routing results in 7.0 - detour to charger and charging over 80%

The updated planner seems to be confused. https://abetterrouteplanner.com/?plan_uuid=2-69748667-8d6b26af1f2c5ceee9c9adcd

See attached. It suggests to go to a charger somewhere in Hungary, which is way off the route, even though there is another Tesla charter much closer (in Bratislava). You can see the other Tesla charger in the top right corner of the picture. You can also see that it suggests to charge to 99%.

This behaviour was not happening in the old version. As a matter of fact, the old algorithm seemed to be perfect.

Where does this happen?

    Hi @T603,

Thank you for taking the time to report this.

Have you checked the selected/allowed plug types in vehicle settings for this plan?

I did no changes for this. I used what is set default for Tesla.

I understand. I’m, however, not currently able to replicate the result, including the charging stop in Parndorf.

Are you still getting this plan alternative?

Me neither now. However, I was checking other routes I’ve driven, and I noticed that the optimiser can be somewhat erratic at times. I mean that it sometimes suggests chargers that are far off the route.

I should add that I have the setting to prefer Tesla chargers enabled. It also seems to depend very much on the boundary conditions — it’s possible to get quite different results just by changing the departure SoC or the limit on one or two chargers en route.

I wonder if the behaviour of the old version would come back if there is again the max SoC on fast chargers?

As mentioned in the other ticket - the planner should take the charging curve into consideration and essentially impose a default upper limit, without any manual value set.

So I agree it is strange that this result was generated, as we should only do so if there’s no other way - such as in situations with very few charging options along the route, long distances etc.

A manual setting for max SoC would be more like a band-aid; it wouldn’t fix the underlying issue. We’ll monitor the issue with this kind of route proposals.

And we’ll take feedback related to if there should/shouldn’t be a manual Max SoC setting in: Missing setting for maximum SoC / Upper limit for charging

I think users will require that limit anyways because many of them set the limit in their car. Moreover, at least Tesla is discouraging drivers to supercharge over 80%. I’ve noticed that the new algorithm often suggests 82, 85 %. I think nice benchmark is the route Meyrin, France to Prague, Czech Rep. I’ve done that trip several times, so I can compare what Tesla suggests, what is the reality and what ABRP calculates. There was no need to go over 80% (Model 3, RWR, LR) even when the weather was really bad (-5˚C, snow).

It can’t be doing that when its telling me to charge to 99% only to arrive at next charger at 27%
