UK Motorway voice guidance is not idiomatic

The voice guidance currently uses some American terminology. For example, in the route below, the exit is referred to as a “ramp”. A more idiomatic UK phrasing would be “exit left to A21”.

Other common phrases could include:

• To direct the driver to exit at a particular junction: “Exit left at junction 12a”

• To direct the driver to use specific lanes: “Use the right two lanes to continue towards M25 Dartford Crossing”

There are also cases where the instructions are correct but could be more helpful for the drivers forward planning.

It is useful to be as specific as possible, as many exits have two or more lanes leading towards a roundabout. In this case, the direction should be: “Exit left for A229 and then use the right lane for A229 towards Maidstone”. Currently most root planners give this as two instructions the second only being provided once it has confirmed your on the exit leading to last minute need to change lanes.

It is also important to be specific about the optimal lane to use. In the example below, the voice guidance says to use the right two lanes towards the M26. However, it should say to “Use the two right lanes to continue to the M26 and then use the left lane to exit left for the A21” or “Keep in the two right-hand lanes to continue towards the M26. Then move into the left-hand lane and take the exit for the A21“, as immediately after that split, the guidance asks the driver to use the left lane to exit.
