Sad ABRP failures, second time!

I drive a 2025 BYD Seal long range in Australia and although the built in BYD route planner in the Seal has gotten better it is still not flexible enough for me but the biggest drawback is that if you select Tesla as a selected charging network it will send you to any Tesla station including Tesla only which makes it untrustworthy. You will need to exclude Tesla if you want to use it. The solution: ABRP with an OBD2 dongle.

I’ve tried and tested enthusiastically ABRP in three long road trips and this is the list of things I don’t like or that ABRP is doing because maybe is buggy. Either way I think most drivers like me all we want is to rely and trust on a smart and dynamic route planner that ensures you don’t run out of charge at any point, gets you where you want to go and let’s you define natural aspects of any trip like where you are eating or where you are sleeping, etc.

  • When in an active route if I approach the charger site while scouting a nearby place to eat ABRP assumes that I have started charging and shows me a button with “Done charging”. If you take too long or miss the charger and attempt to go back ABRP may complete sometimes the charging automagically and send you to the next charging stop. ABRP should not assume anything and confirm charging started by either detecting an increase in SOC or giving the option to manually confirm charging started.

  • When charging and using OBD2 connection for live data, if stepping out of the car to visit a nearby bathroom or coffee shop while the charging completes ABRP assumes charging only lasted from the moment it thinks it started until I turned it off and locked it, so two minutes maybe. Naturally OBD2 connectivity will not be up while the car is off and while I am far from the car but ABRP should not assume charging has completed automatically, it should wait until I mark it as completed and compute all energy consumed and SOC increase at that point. The saved trip data afterwards look silly!

  • ABRP should allow me to define one of the charging stops as an overnight stay and allow me to choose whether I wish to charge the evening before (weird choice) or in the morning the next day (better for the battery). To force it to do this one must add the overnight accomodation as a stop, then add the charging stop right after but if the charger is too close ABRP may play silly buggers the night before!

  • Having set the SOC at charger to 25% as a precaution, on a quite hot day and with the A/C running high the estimated arrival SOC of 31% kept reducing all the way to 8% when I finally made it to the scheduled charger. Why did not ABRP attempted to reroute me or suggested another charging stop before that point? I may guess that on that particular trip I had selected Tesla as my preferred network and no others but I think ABRP settings should differentiate between preferred networks when all goes according to plan and networks that should be added on top when the plan breaks. Maybe even have two critically layers where you accept some DC networks if a unscheduled top up is needed and another set where even AC chargers could be suggested if things go critical. All in the name of ensuring the system looks smartly after you and that no matter what real time changes affect our actual consumption, ABRP has our backs.

  • As the title suggested it the biggest ABRP disappointment is that while planning a route at home it suggested to charge at a Tesla only supercharger. This means that in a hypothetical critical reroute moment when i’m out and about on a long trip relying on ABRP to keep my car charged it may send me to a charger my car cannot use. Really all we need is a Plugshare style filter toggle in the charging settings that filters out Tesla only superchargers.

  • When a planned charging stop is skipped for whatever reason, ABRP should detect this because it sees the distance increasing constantly, should show an updated estimated arrival SOC at the next planned charging stop and ask the driver whether to continue on or to stop somewhere else before it. Instead ABRP would insist forever in going back to the planned charger left behind. Would not stop unless the driver stops the car, removes the stop from the plan and recalculates the trip without it.

  • ABRP in Apple Carplay shows the current SOC and the estimated SOC at the next charger but does not show what time will I get there. One needs to calculate the duration mentally judging the SOC difference decrease.

  • Sometimes when the “Done charging” button disappears but I have actually completed charging as planned, would drive off the station but ABRP would direct me back into the station.

Unless I am using ABRP in a completely wrong way, I really hope you guys fix some of these annoying issues. I have still hopes that ABRP could be my type of solution but I need to trust it and lately I don’t have much trust at all with these weird issues popping up. Thanks.
