Premature charging completion with OBDBLE
Several times this trip, the app will declare charging is complete when the goal hasn’t been reached. My sense is that it happens when I leave the vicinity of the car and then return, and the BLE connection to the OBD reader has dropped and then been restored. However I’m not certain that is necessary to trigger it. Quitting the app and restarting doesn’t help reset it; you have to leave driving mode and replan.

Hey Robert,
thanks for your feedback on this issue and the eventlog. I improved the situation a bit now, so now we also detect chargers a bit better, that are not exactly where the marker on the map is. We will test this a bit more and let you know once we have something, you can try.

looking at your screenshot, it actually looks like you have a plan, that is not at the charger (or rather where we think the charger is) but kind of close to it. As you can see we estimate one min driving towards the charger. This is probably also where the contradiction of the departure SoC from the SoC bar and the box with the charge stop comes from.
So when this happened, what exactly was your situation?
Did you move around while the car was at the charger and then opened the app further away from the car, or have you been at the car all the time when this happened?
Was the charger at a different location than what we showed on the map?
Did you get the “I’m at the charger” / “I’m done charging” message and did you click either of them?

At the time of the screenshot I was sitting in the car at the charger. As I mentioned in my original bug report my intuition is that this happens when I briefly leave the vicinity of the car while charging (usually to use the restroom). This is likely a really common scenario for your users. I’m quite certain I did not see or respond to either the “done charging” or “begin charging” prompts when I left or returned to the car.
To be clear the goal in my plan was not 63%… it was higher. I’ve had it declare “done charging” prematurely by 30% or more. That’s the crux of the issue.

we just introduced the “i’m at the charger” button, to avoid these kind of issues.
The problem with the automatic detection of being at the charger is that when users move away and then get a new gps location, we might detect it as movement and then recalculate the plan. Especially with OBD, the connection to telemetry breaks when leaving the car, so we don’t know if you are charging or not.
I would recommend, to click the at charger button, as that should improve the situation for exactly that scenario. Next time please try it with that button. Especially when the charger is not exactly at the location shown on the map this will definitely improve the situation for you.
Unfortunately this is no easy scenario to reproduce, but we will try our best to make it better even without clicking that button.

I don’t recall that button coming up after the initial arrival at the charger but I’ll look for it. I have another road trip planned at the end of this month and will be more attentive to exactly what happens. Is there any sort of hidden debug mode or data collection feature I could use to collect runtime data in this state? I worked in IT and software for 30 years including for mobile products… not afraid of getting my hands a little dirty.
BTW, despite my griping about this issue, the app’s reliability has improved SO MUCH- we’ve had an EV since 2019 and I used to be hesitant to recommend the app to non-technical / less patient friends because of all of the glitches and UX issues. Thanks for all of the work you all are doing to make this great app live up to its potential!

By now i could also reproduce it using your eventlog, so I think we do not need any additional information.
The issue is mainly that the charger on the map is a bit further away than your car location. This seems to cause a new calculation of the route, when you re-open the app, where it tries to route you to the charger and continue charging there. This is why you see only a lower departure SoC in the SoC bar and the charging finished notification, as it wants you to drive 1min to the charger and continue there.
It should theoretically work to use the “i’m at the charger” button, but i will also try to improve the overall situation a bit, so that this is also a case we can detect as charge stop.

I am on a road trip now and have not seen this issue recur with two charging stops even when leaving the charger vicinity and coming back mid-charge. Thanks!!

Thanks for reporting! So if I understand this correctly, we read the right SoC from the car and even if it is lower than the planned SoC we show “Planned charging completed”?

Yes. The screen shot shows the contradiction- the chart shows a different charge completion goal than the bottom of the screen. I captured a bug report in the app in this state but wasn’t sure where to find it / how to provide it to you.
