Overall unpleasant experience
Important before reading, I mention the beta version number but most of the issues I describe here were also found in the normal release.
Last summer we did a 2500km Roadtrip and had a mixed experience with ABRP, this years Roadtrip was shorter yet the ABRP experience was terrible.
The Setup:
2021 Fiat 500e 42kWh
VGate vLinker_MC+ OBD2 adapter
ABRP Premium
Samsung Galaxy A53 with all of the latest updates (Android 16, One UI 8), no power save options active, connected to Android Auto using USB cable.
The issues:
Huge resource consumption. Same as last year ABRP behaves as it is the only app running on the phone and eats up all of the resources. The longer the route, the worse it gets. At some point I even got a phone call and it made the whole phone crash.
I have a couple of app running in parallel while driving: Deezer, aprs.fi and Meshtastic. aprs.fi is always on the foreground on the phone while ABRP is displayed on Android Auto. I can run these apps with no issue while Navigating with Google Maps.
Planing a route through Android Auto. You can search for destination through Android Auto is stuck on calculating the route… The only way to unlock it is to bring ABRP in the foreground on the phone and then it will eventually calculate the route..
Android Auto Freeze. Similar to the bug above sometimes the Android Auto display would just freeze randomly. It just stay stuck somewhere, bringing ABRP in the foreground on the phone and the Android Auto display unfreezes.
OBD2 connection. The OBD2 connection was always failing (this is what had me download the beta version). To restore the OBD2 function I had to undo the link in the settings and redo it each time I got in the car. This was really a pain…. The beta version seemed to have sold this issue though.
As a matter of fact I’d say two of the main features which were the main reasons for me to purchase premium either randomly fail (OBD2) between updates or are slow as hell and almost unusable (Android Auto). Somewhere during 2025 you had a big rewriting of the Android Auto code, starting from that point it actually got bad.
