Navigation steps not shown on CarPlay home page consistently

I keep Apple Maps running simultaneously with ABRP due to alerts for crashes and police. Sometimes you need to open Apple Maps. If you do then the dashboard screen shows chargers and search rather than next turn info when you bring ABRP back up.

Where does this happen?

Just following up again after reading Doug’s note. I agree with him. If I start with Apple Maps and then setup the ABRP nav the next turn info will be in the upper right of the CarPlay Dashboard screen. Then if I change back over to AM then it’s instructions are in the upper right. If I go back to yours then I get chargers and search. So Apple gives way back to ABRP but ABRP doesn’t do the right thing.

    Hi

This happens when you use another navigation app at the same time as ABRP.

Yeah I figured that out. I can bounce back and forth between Waze and Apple Maps and won’t have this same problem. It’s an issue with a premium feature of ABRP.

But why does it happen? This seems like a bug to me. It’s these kind of things that make it hard to persuade folks to adopt ABRP as their preferred EV navigation app.

This is a behaviour, that Apple enforces in their guideline for app developers:

“Immediately terminate route guidance when requested. For example, if the driver starts route guidance using the vehicle’s built-in navigation system, your app delegate will receive a cancelation notification and must immediately stop route guidance”. It’s also includes other navigation apps.

Does Apple also require this behavior when another navigation app is running (not the vehicle’s built-in navigation)? That is the situation that the poster is describing. The original poster says that when running Waze & Apple Maps the apps interact as expected and you can switch between them. But that when running ABRP and Apple Maps the behavior is inconsistent and ABRP does continue running (and in my experience I think it also continues providing route guidance) but the display of the route guidance is not up to date when you switch back. I’ll have to play with it today to see what actually happens with current versions of Apple Maps, ABRP, and the built-in navigation, but my expectation is to get lots of chatter as they all tell me where to go, that is definitely the way it was in the past.

What I think the Apple rule is trying to say is that only the active navigation app should be providing route guidance (i.e., spoken instructions and/or displaying on the vehicle’s screen).

I read this to say that navigating and providing route guidance are different things, and you can continue navigating (and, also IMHO, it is none of Apple’s business if you do continue navigating even if another app is active and providing guidance) even if you are not the active app providing guidance. All you need to do is to stop providing active route guidance.

This distinction is important for a couple of reasons:

          • There are vehicles, like some KIA models, that will only precondition the battery if you are using the built-in navigation to navigate to a charging station.

          • ABRP is not good at providing timely traffic / road closure alerts, so it can be useful to have another app open to get a “second opinion” on routing in real time.

          • Similarly ABRP is not good at “last mile” routing, so having another app available for guidance as you approach your destination can be very helpful.

          • ABRP often does “quirky” navigation: for example Inappropriate Navigation and the related bug reports. Sometimes it appears to be trying to avoid traffic, other times it appears to be trying to “over optimize” by cutting through parking lots and alleys, but it’s another reason for wanting to be having another navigation app running in parallel with ABRP.

          • The ABRP POI database, at least in the US, is full of bugs and omissions, so I (and I’d imagine many others) use other navigation apps to find a POI and then copy the address into ABRP.

Hopefully I’ve made the case for keeping ABRP running and navigating even if it is not the app providing route guidance at the moment. Given that, it would be very nice if ABRP would immediately update guidance when it becomes the active navigation app. I would think that even if Apple does not provide an “activation notification” to match the cancelation notification when another app becomes the route guidance provider, there would at least be a notification that ABRP has been given the display and that could be used to do a full refresh of the UI including an update of the route guidance and speed limit, etc.

What I currently see is that ABRP won’t display any guidance until it displays new guidance.
