Map zoom out not available

When I click on the map it zooms in closer. But there is no tool I can see to zoom out. So I can't see the whole route. It makes your route planner unusable. I must be doing something wrong - others have recommended the app as very useful. There's nothing I can see in the App settingsre user interface or maps to address this. I'm using a small ish laptop.
