Map position update too slow to use it for driving

When driving a route, the time between position updates is about 30 seconds. This makes following thd map tedious since I'm not sure precisely where I am. I sometimes miss turns or exits.

Occasionally, it will update much more quickly (“real time”). This is for an entire session. But the next time that I use it, it is back to slow updates.
