Feedback on ABRP CarPlay + OBD Usage (Overheating Issue) in 7.0.5 (5809)

Hello ABRP Team,

First off, I really enjoy using ABRP—especially with the OBD connection. I recently used the app on a trip from Pullman, WA to Seattle, WA in my 2024 Mini Cooper SE (114-mile range), and having the live data made me much more confident compared to my previous road trips. So thank you for that.

I did run into an issue I wanted to share.

My setup was:

  • iPhone 14 Pro

  • Connected to CarPlay (wired)

  • OBD Link connected via Bluetooth and actively used by ABRP

After about 45 minutes to an hour of driving, my phone became extremely hot—almost too hot to touch. Eventually, it slowed down significantly, stopped charging (likely due to thermal protection), and became unresponsive until it cooled off.

A couple of things that might help narrow it down:

  • I had the OBD connected the whole time, although I did notice the connection could be a bit weak or inconsistent at times

  • Even when the Bluetooth indicator in the ABRP CarPlay interface showed green, the overheating still occurred

  • I tried a similar setup using Waze (with the OBD still connected to the phone, but not used by the app), and I did not experience the same overheating issue

This makes me think it might be related to how ABRP handles CarPlay + OBD data together, possibly in terms of polling frequency or processing load.

I’m a software engineer and would be happy to help debug or test this further if useful. I can provide more detailed observations, try different configurations, or help isolate the issue.

Thanks again for building such a useful tool—I’d love to help make it even more solid.

Best regards,
Julien
