In Tacoma, WA and Port Angeles, WA ABRP has created routes that use alleys. In Tacoma the route was to the "back door" of a house. In Port Angeles the route was a short cut after a missed turn (and went down the alley the wrong way).

Here's an example: Backdoor" route in Tacoma: https://abetterrouteplanner.com/?plan_uuid=ffaebbe2-2df1-486f-976b-f07001493fa7

Routing through alleys is a problem for a number of reasons:

  • It is or may be perceived as anti-social, especially if it results in a significant increase in traffic in the alley or if folks don't usually drive down the alleys.
  • Alleys are often unnamed, so it makes driving harder because you get a turn with no street name, often just before the street where you expect to turn. If you miss the turn (which is easy when you're expecting a street) ABRP is recalculating right as it should be directing you to turn onto the street you were heading for.
  • It's confusing to the driver when ABRP starts recalculating right about when you were expecting to turn.
  • Over (wired) Apple CarPlay ABRP is lagy enough in a Kia that it adds to the confusion as you're about to make a turn.
