Does ABRP take charge limits into account?

So bascially, does ABRP take into account the limit of DC charges before throttles happen on certain cars such as the Toyota bZ4X which is (as per info from Toyota) limited to 3.8 charges. I have no clue how their system calculates this. Some say it’s a penalty algorithm system, others say it’s cycles from 10-80 and yet another group of people say it’s from 0-100% percent.

In any case, does this have an effect on the route calculated or does ABRP not take this into account when calculating routes?

Thanks.

    Hi

When we are model a car before we add it to the vehicle list we do take charge limits into account. The charging information is included when we make a plan.
If you have a plan where you think we have calculated wrong please add a link to that one. Click at Share plan and Share ABRP link.

      Hi Linda.

I believe a long drive like this is calculated wrong.
After about 4 times of DC charging on the bZ4X, we’ll see the charging speeds drop more and more.
After about 6 or 7 stops with DC charging, it’ll be as low as 22kw/h or slower.

I know this from this summer drive home from Austria to Denmark. The closer we got to home, to slower it was charging and the last stop was extremely slow.

      Route from Denmark to Croatia:

This summers drive from Austria to Denmark:

It took almost 3 hours more than ABRP had calculated.

I’m using an OBD dongle connected and all charges before the DC limit is hit, is very accurate.

Thanks. I have sent this to a colleague so he can look at it. I will get back to you.

          Hi Linda.
It’s been about 2 months now and I haven’t heard anything regarding this. Could you please follow up?

          Thanks.

My colleague have not looked at this yet. Right now he is working on adding battery performance modeling, but focusing mostly on cold weather since it’s winter. Your question will be relevant next year as we do the same thing but for warm weather.

              Hi Linda.

I believe this is a year-round relevant question.

The issue is that the Toyota bZ4X has a DC charging limit, but it does not appear that the ABRP app takes this limitation into account when planning routes.

This becomes problematic on longer trips, as the route planning assumes charging behavior that the vehicle cannot actually achieve. This applies to all routes, regardless of season.

I would even say it becomes more apparent during the winter season, as the car covers fewer kilometers on a full charge, causing the DC charging limit to be reached even sooner compared to warmer summer conditions.

              Thank you.

              Hi Linda.
I would like to update this thread.
I do now have the bZ4X 2026 (facelifted model), which is supposed to have a limit of 5 charges.

Now, the issue persists though, and ontop of that. ABRP are not able to connect to any OBD dongles connected to the bZ4X 2026 model as of now (I believe it’s called bZ 2026 in the US, but I’m from europe.)
