Navigation in compact urban areas -- say navigating to a charger is made harder by insufficient contrast between the "route behind" and the "route ahead," and it's even worse when the "post-waypoint route" is also in the view, and it gets really bad when those routes cross each other…

The visual problem is sometimes compounded by laggy map updates and streets with missing names in the instructions (this often happens when the route sends you down odd bits of urban pavement in shopping centers or when alleys are included in the route or when the street name is ambiguous).

I would appreciate a very clear visual distinction between:

  • The route you've already traversed (maybe reduce the shading to something like 50%).
  • The route ahead of you.
  • Inactive route segments: the route you will be following after the next waypoint (or the return route of a roundtrip) -- this could be dashed or dotted, or even a lighter shade. It might be nice to have the option to turn this route off altogether (in which case it would be good to treat the roundtrip route separately, I'd guess that most folks don't need to see the return route on the outbound trip).

Another thing that would help to make the routes more readable would be to "overlay" the coding of slow sections of the route so that the underlying route marking was still visible rather than having the whole route line change color.
