Android Auto navigation freezes after prolonged stationary periods

When using ABPR through Android Auto, if the vehicle remains stationary for an extended period for example, when stuck in a motorway traffic jam the navigation can become increasingly laggy and eventually freeze.

The issue appears to be related to being stationary for a long period rather than normal driving.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start navigation in ABPR using Android Auto.

  2. Remain stationary for an extended period, such as in a motorway traffic jam (over 30mins).

  3. Observe that the navigation interface gradually becomes more laggy.

  4. Eventually, the navigation can freeze and stop responding normally.

Workaround

The current workaround is to:

  1. Find a safe place to stop.

  2. Disconnect Android Auto.

  3. Close ABPR completely on the Android device.

  4. Restart the app.

  5. Restart navigation.

Impact

This is particularly problematic as the workaround requires the driver to find somewhere safe to stop and reset everything. During a long traffic jam, this may not be possible for several miles.

The car is a Hyundai Inster and the phone is a Fairphone 4 this issue doesn’t occur with other apps: Waze, Google Maps, or Garmin Drive.
