ABRP is good. Some things I'd like to see it do better.
I’ve stopped paying for subscription features primarily because I take road trips infrequently. I would still consider supporting (paying for) the application continuously because I believe it’s as close as you’ll get to having a Tesla with charging app. Here are some things that I’d like ABRP to consider improving. I mainly use ABRP for trip planning on my desktop. I love it for that. I want much more.
Planning issues: It’s difficult to tell ABRP to favor a particular charging network over another. The point is when I pay for a monthly membership to get a reduced price per kWh, the program logic won’t deviate far enough from the 1-2 Thumbs preference and loner/shorter stops to allow me to make compromises to save money.
Access to charging stations and site capacity. If I’m on the Interstate highway. I always want to charge more earlier in the day. I am more likely to drive up to a Walmart Electrify America station and find an available charger in the morning. That means my more and less stops vary based on my issue with finding an available charging location more than ideal spacing of stops.
Bigger is better. Now that I have access to Tesla Superchargers, and since I need to occupy two parking spaces to charge, due to cable length and charging port location, I want to go to the supercharger station with 20,50, 50, and even 160+ stations (Lost Hills, I-5 California). I will adjust my stops to fit that one in. It’s also off-grid Solar.
Connectivity: ABRP has issues functioning when cellular network coverage is bad. I have a triple carrier SIM, so if there is coverage, I have data. ABRP needs offline caching of routes so it can provide basic nav. offline. (may have gotten better since 2024?).
BLE Security: I’ve just purchased a BLE OBD dongle so ABRP can update my routes in real-time. I’m very excited, except I’m also sacred to keep the OBDLink CX powered on with weak BLE security and the warning that ABRP provides. The OBDLink scanner that I use for everything else attaches to my phone like the rest of my Bluetooth devices, with better security. I’m sure there is a technical issue and reason, but it’s a bit frustrating to think that I may want to disconnect the adapter every time I stop.
Navigation: This does not work well in my city. Nav doesn’t know when I should get on the freeway or stay on city streets. I’ve tried it. You can’t make me use it. Check out Google’s Nav. It’s not perfect, but it’s probably the bar to strive for. I’m sure it would cost an arm and a leg to use in ABRP.
UI streamlining: I’ve read comments about ABRP not being as user friendly as it could be. Check out how Google Maps works. Saving places, planning routes, it’s very easy. Finding settings across different areas of the screen is not intuitive.
Thanks! - Still a fan, still recommend the app, want more!
