Hi,
Been using ABRP since the early days and always found it a real help.
As I drive a recent Tesla and I use multipass, the program is now overkill, but I use it to compare with the car routing on long journeys where I am driving to the limit of the autonomy.
So last week I was using ABRP 7 Premium on a 1600km journey.
I was disappointed to experience that the app had a few major flaws that made it unusable.
As there are a lot of cars and a lot of smartphones, it is maybe useful this is reported here:
1) the tactile feedback was horrible (mostly when driving) and it seemed due to very poor performance of the program. I have no screen protection and all other programs I use on this phone respond instantly. But ABRP did not.
Most of the time one had the impression the app was frozen, but sometimes with careful and long press, it wanted to take interaction into account. (!?)
2) the app was crashing regularly (after some time). Of course other apps were running at the same time (like coyote), but this shouldn’t cause a problem.
3) Some app buttons were behind the virtual (floating) Android buttons (at bottom of the screen) with the consequence that instead of depressing the app button, one was interacting with Android. Most of the time solution was to scroll the page in order to move the app button above the android buttons, but I think there exist system calls to avoid this weird interface glitch.
4) There is usually a sort of colored progress bar giving from right to left the expected real-time evolution of the SOC from position to destination.
a) There was at times a (variable) lag between the Tesla displayed SOC and the SOC in ABRP, that let think the value was calculated instead of read from the car.
b) This (most) useful bar sometimes disappeared giving the impression that the application was not in “drive” mode. Best way to get back to normal was to restart the app.
Probably the problems I describe are due to improper use of the app, but I doubt it and if it were the case, it is a sign that the app has become too sophisticated for occasional users.
My configuration is the following : Samsung S23 Ultra (UI 8.0 on Android 16) and Tesla Model Y Juniper. Again I don’t think the hardware is too old. Software is very recent and could be unstable or incompatible.
I think I am part of the beta program. Version installed is 7.0.5
The following might be worth noting : (without 100% confidence) problems were mostly apparent when driving. So testing the app before the drive doesn’t reveal anything.
Of course driving and trying to debug at the same time isn’t safe and you don’t always have a tech savvy copilot on hand.
